Disneyland Vacation in a Nutshell

For Spring Break this year we, once again, spent the week at the Disneyland Resort. Monday was the drive down. It snowed of course!

Malia drove through this part, naturally. She is much better about this than I am. Slamming us into a divider will do this to you. It got worse...

before it got better.

The rest of the drive after Bishop was my turn. I got to drive us through the windy section, so it kept me awake!

We had to make a stop at a Target to pick up new water bottles (left the old ones at home!)

I like these water bottles. BPA, phthalates, and PVC free, and way less wasted plastic, as well as being able to use probably the best quality water in the world, it just makes sense. $40 for 4 of these bottles makes sense when you consider how much a bottle of water costs at Disneyland (or anywhere else for that matter!)

We finally rolled into our "home away from home" and said "Hi!" to our old pal,

After getting checked in, we went up to our room, and this was the view that awaited us!

Free upgrade! Gotta love it! It was truly an amazing view. The picture doesn't do it justice.

We had about 2 hours before dinner reservations at The Rainforest Cafe, so we wandered around Downtown Disney. The LEGO store has some really cool statues, as seen below.

I could easily spend a fortune in the LEGO store. Between the Super-Hero sets, the Lord of the Rings sets, and the Star Wars sets, I could blow a whole paycheck here!

Dinner was decent. A bit over-priced, but then again, what isn't? I had shrimp, steak, and ribs combo with broccoli. No pictures of that. After dinner, we wandered back to the hotel and the boys went swimming. I thought it was too cold, so I just bundled up on my chair!

The next morning was early entry into Disneyland. We were in the park by 8 AM and on our way to Star Tours. I was fortunate enough to be picked as the "Rebel Spy", so of course I had to buy the t-shirt.

Next up was Space Mountain. I think this is really the best ride at Disneyland. It's fast, it's dark, it's cool! It's SPACE!!!!!! The music alone is worth the ride!

The rest of the morning was finishing up Tomorrowland and parts of Fantasyland. 

We then headed to the back of Disneyland into Critter Country. Where we had lunch at the Hungry Bear Restaurant. I had a Chili Cheese Burger on a gluten free bun with gluten free Sweet Potato Fries. Pretty good stuff.

After lunch we worked our way down New Orleans Square and rode Haunted Mansion. Sadly, Pirates was closed for most of the day.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye was up next. It's a fun ride!

Finally, the moment I had been waiting for was up...The Jungle Cruise. It was the longest wait we had had all day at 30 minutes. Not bad, but it was weird. They even had the second floor portion of the queue open. In all my years of going, I had never been upstairs before. It was really cool!

Sadly, the wait was not worth it. Skipper Randy was awful. Hopefully he was just having a bad day, because he totally ruined this ride.

Afterwards, we headed over to the Enchanted Tiki Room. I like the music here. It's fun.

Since it was Long Lost Friends Week, we headed over to the Big Thunder Ranch to see who we could see. Noah got to meet his favorite Disney Character,

I got to meet Robin Hood, even if he was a bit upset with my Captain Hook shirt! Prince John even tried to steal my ring!

Next up was Uncle Scrooge and Ludwig Von Drake. Marc and I posed along with these two, while Malia visited with a real Long Lost Friend she went to elementary school with.

Outside the Ranch we ran into Woody. Despite the Facebook post, Woody doesn't fall to the ground when you yell "Andy's coming!" His handler just replies, "Nope, Andy's at college! He said goodbye already!"

After a little more time with Marla and her kids, it was off to Toontown, where Malia and I picked up these beauties!

After dark, we wandered around through the park, and I got this great picture of the Tangled Tower in the Fantasy Faire with the Castle in the background. The Fantasy Faire is a neat place, but not much for teenage and pre-teenage boys to do, unless they want to look at the princesses!

We closed the park down at 9 PM and felt like we had a good day, so it was off to bed.

I was woken up by a huge flash of light around 1:45 AM. I looked out the window and saw they were running the World of Color lights and water jets. It was pretty cool!

Next morning was all about Carsland (Still think they should have named it Radiator Springs instead, but whatever!). We were some of the first in line for the park, but since we followed the rules and walked, we were not the first on the ride. Taking Cast Member Tony's advice, we walked right over to Carsland where Cast Members were walking everyone through Radiator Springs. A very smart idea as all the people running were really making things unsafe!

The queue itself is amazing! So much detail went into this ride. Again, pictures really don't do it justice.

We rode once as a family and then, following Tony's advice, did the single rider line. All in all, we rode RSR 5 times, and that's including two fairly extensive down times for the ride.

We got the whole family on Screamin' one time. I was impressed that we even got that many! Marc joined Noah and me for 1 more run using the single rider line. 2 times was enough. No one threw up, but everyone decided they had had enough.

Eventually, Noah and I made our way over to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Both of us were pretty nervous about it. Honestly can't say who was more afraid, me of the boy! But,if you can see our faces in the picture below, you can tell who had the best time! Oddly enough, I have no memory of the woman next to me. I remember there were two teenage girls who were giving their Mom and Noah (and me) a pep talk, but the lady and many next to me? No idea they were there. Weird.

However, he's the one who got the t-shirt!

Back in Carsland, here's a picture of Marc showing off his new ears! He really wanted a pair of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit ears, so there ya go!

Grizzly River Run has some beautiful picture spots, and this is one of my favorites. It looks so wild and natural!

We finished the night with a ride on Toy Story Midway Mania and watching the backside of World of Color. Fun stuff!

The next morning was our last day in the park, so it was an early entry into Disneyland. We got there so early, we were the first ones in one of the lines! Very cool!

Once we got in, we were stopped at the end of Main Street. Once again, everyone around us was ignoring the calls to walk. We had a nice leisurely stroll over to Star Tours again. Marc was desperate to be chosen as the rebel spy, but it was not meant to be on this trip. We rode 3 times in a row with no luck!

Eventually we made our way to the Matterhorn. I'm not a big fan of this one. It's okay, but I'd rather ride Space Mountain than this one.

We stood in line for the three busiest dark rides; Alice, Mr. Toad and Peter Pan. I like all three of these classics. Afterwards, we tried to see who would be the true king of England.

Fittingly, our last ride was Carsland. We walked by Mater on the way!

All in all, it was a great time. We all enjoyed ourselves. Mostly. The boys would have liked more junk food. I would have liked a son who knows how to walk in a crowd, but over all, it was a great trip.

I am looking forward to the next one!

Ouch

Saturday morning was an uneventful day until we went to pick up the dog. He had spent the week at the "pet resort" and he was happy to see us. I bent down to pet him just as he jumped up and SLAM! His head met my jaw with jarring results. Instant pain in my left jaw.

Eventually I went to the Urgent care and discovered no damage was done to the jaw, just tender and sore for a few days. However, they did discover a major sinus infection from the CT scan. So, I guess that's something. So, now I am on an anti-inflammatory and a antibiotic! Woot! 

Things I Learned

A quick blog post about things I learned this week.

1) After not drinking soda for over two months, I can officially say I don't ever want to drink it again. I tried a sip of Marc's on Thursday and had my own on Friday. Blech. I had two sips of mine and it sat before I threw it out.

2) I don't miss bread. It's okay, I guess. Had some with dinner at Blue Bayou, a hot dog bun at lunch, and a hamburger bun with dinner. I wish I had just done without it.

3) Chocolate is still my master. I have a hard time passing it up. Had it like 5 times this week, and it still owns me. Going super dark helps the urge, but it's my addiction.

4) Potatoes are still good. Baked, fried, mashed, boiled, julienned, you name it, still good. Had those 4 times this week, and I enjoyed them every

5) I missed my Paleo diet. My morning eggs over easy with Canadian bacon is something I enjoy. I even missed my salads with protein and balsamic vinaigrette. I can't wait to go shopping tomorrow and restock on old favorites.

6) You can get Disney overload. I don't mean short term like "Okay, we've been in the park all day and I'm ready to go back to the hotel," overload. I mean, "Okay, I'm ready to go home now," overload. I hit that feeling Thursday afternoon. I was done. I think 3 years in a row was too much. I still had a good time, but I was ready to be home this time, instead of trying to figure out how to stay for just "one more day."

7) If you see something you want, don't wait until it's too late. Missed two shirts I wanted, because I thought they would be available at other stores. Wasn't able to get back in to get them.

8) Tipping housecleaning. Who knew?

9) My cat missed me. Lots of kisses from him.

10) No matter how many times you ride Star Tours, you are still not likely to be picked as the Rebel spy. Poor Marc.

Chillin'

Out the door by 6 AM. That was the plan. We made it out by 5:55. Not bad! It wasn't until about 3 or so hours later we realized we left the water bottles in the fridge.

About that same time we saw the sign for chains required ahead. At this point, I was ready to pay someone else to put them on. Luckily we didn't have to chain up and it was fine.

Fairly uneventful drive once we got to Bishop. By then it was just seriously strong winds.

Decided to find a Target to pick up water bottles and then head over to the Disney Character Warehouse store. 4 new bottles and we were back on the road.

The address the GPS gave us was absolutely wrong, so we were going WAY out of our way. Frustrating to say the least. Our frustration hit even stronger when we arrived to find the Charactrt Warehouse was gone, and in it's place was the Character Depot. Not much to interest us after all that.

Getting to the hotel was easy. Got set up and discovered we were put in an even numbered room which are park view rooms. We didn't pay for that, but I'll take it.

Went out to do some shopping before dinner. Saw some really cool prints that I am going to have a hard time saying no to later in the week

Dinner was at The Rainforest Cafe. It was okay. I had the Steak, Coconut Shrimp, and BBQ ribs with broccoli. Good stuff. Ran into the first of my students while getting ready to go in. Great kids and very nice parents. I hope they have a great time! They are having dinner at Club 33 one day this week! Lucky ducks!

After dinner the boys went for a swim. I was cold, so I bundled up under my hoodie and went out with them. Being bald means you lose all sorts of warmth through you head. Not fun.

Anyway, park is about to close and the World of Color show will be starting soon!

Update

Well, that didn't go as planned. Totally forgot to blog the past few days. I'll do a modified post while on road.

Disney California Adventure just turned 10 years old, and while the park has struggled to find it's identity, it is now a park that can pull in it's own respectable attendance numbers.

A lot of the park has changed since opening day, and it seems to be helping.

Instead of a blow by blow of the park, I'm going to list the rides I like most. I'll update from the park on Wednesday how the new stuff is.

The first ride is Soarin' over California. It's basically an IMAX motion ride with sensory enhancements. This one is a family favorite. We'll do this at least 3 times.

Rounding the corner we get to Grizzly River Run. On Splash Mountain, they say you may get wet. On GRR, it's you will get wet, you may get soaked. It's the best water ride at Disneyland. I started to say best anywhere, but that would be the Atlantis ride at Seaworld. GRR is one you want to do on a hot day.

The Little Mermaid is further down. It's like the classic Disney dark ride, with animatronics. Pretty cool, and usually a decent wait time.

Probably my current favorite ride at DCA is Toy Story Midway Mania. It's a 3-d game and a ride. You use your ride mounted "gun" to throw darts, rings, baseballs, and more darts at the images on the screens. It's a fun ride to be sure.

California Screamin' has become a favorite of the oldest boy. It's a high speed roller coaster. It's pretty fun. Just hold on, because you will go fast, and upside down.

The last ride worth mentioning at DCA is the Monsters, Inc dark ride. It's a great ride. There is a quasi-interactive element at the end that can be funny.

There are other things to do at this park that we just don't do anymore (I'm looking at you Bug's Land, and Jellyfish Jumpers), haven't done yet (Carsland and Tower of Terror), and some shows to see. It's worth going in to this park for sure.

Today's weight came in at 228. Grrr. Weight loss has been non-existent the past few weeks. Hopefully this trip will re-energize that. I just have to try not to make myself sick by adding in too much junk food!

Food diary will be hit and miss. Maybe I'll do the whole picture update thing instead of a list.

Oops!

So, in my Tylenol PM haze yesterday, I left off a very important thing to do at Disneyland. The Enchanted Tiki Room. So, due to that error, I bring you the entire original show! Enjoy it while imagining eating a Dole Whip, or get some Pineapple Soft Serve and enjoy it for real!

The Other Side of the Park

The day I post the least is the day I have the highest page view! 83 people checked out my pity party! Hilarious! Another funny thing? I took Tylenol PM about an hour ago, and it's starting to kick in while I am writing this, so hopefully I finish it and it makes sense at the end!

So, I'm going to condense the rest of the park into today's post. Should be fun.

We leave Toontown and head back through Fantasyland to enter Frontierland behind the wildest ride in the wilderness, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. I am a big fan of this one, as I am of all the roller coasters in the Disneyland Resort. Sadly, this is closed right now due to an almost year long refurbishment. It's probably a good thing though, so who am I to say? 

The Rivers of America are up next. Fun boat rides of all kinds, including a paddlewheel steamer called The Mark Twain, the sailing ship Columbia, and the ride where you are the power that keeps it moving, the Davy Crockett Canoes. It's a fun work out if you are looking for that!

We'll skip over to New Orleans Square next. Here we find two classics:

The Pirates of the Caribbean.

Another favorite, but then again, what isn't? Love PotC ride. The movies aren't bad as well. The addition of Jack Sparrow a few years ago was a welcome addition that gave a little life to the ride. Some the scenes are only okay, but for the most part, it was a good idea.

Next up is the Haunted Mansion. Another fun ride. I really like the traditional HM, but the Nightmare Before Christmas version is pretty cool!

3 of the 999 Happy Haunts that await your return!

Heading out of New Orleans Square, we find ourselves in Critter Country. Two big rides here:

Splash Mountain.

I love this ride, though the first time I went on it, I did freak out a bit about the drop pictured above, but I've gotten used to it. It's fun, even if most of the people have never seen the movie it is based off of. I would have hoped we would be beyond this, but apparently we aren't ready for this as a society.

Next up is The Many Adventures of Winne the Pooh. A fun, classic dark fide. However, the Country Bear Jamboree used to be on this spot. In order to pay homage to those days, if you look over your shoulder in one of the rooms, you will see the guys below that are the only left overs from the old CBJ. Pretty cool!

Heading out of Critter Country and New Orleans Square, we find ourselves in Adventureland. The first ride is The Indiana Jones Temple of the Forbidden Eye. Mara is a cruel god and it seems like all the times I have gone of this one, I've yet to be awarded my gift.

The best for last? Well, my favorite anyway! The Jungle Cruise is one of the few rides where the operator makes or breaks the ride. A good skipper will have you rolling in the aisles. A bad skipper? They miss the dock and forget to drop you off! 

Someday, I am going to work this ride!

Ok, Tylenol is kicking. Better get moving!

Weight has jumped back up 5 pounds this week. Kids are are acting crazy. Feeling not so great about my job. Yelling at my own kids since i got home. I'm done for the day.

Life is just a Fantasy!

Today we got some bummer news. This trip we had planned to take our niece with us. However, she is having some medical issues and won't be able to travel to Disneyland. We are all pretty bummed about it. Not sure when we are going to be able to make the trip up to her, but we will do our best.

On to the run down of Fantasyland and Toontown.

Fantasyland has some really cool rides. After exiting the castle, there is the Peter Pan Flight on the right. This is probably the most popular of all the Fantasyland dark rides.

This is also my favorite dark ride.I love flying over London as seen above!

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is next door. Another fun dark ride.

Across the way is Pinocchio's Daring Journey and Snow White's Scary Adventure. These are pretty fun as well. They're not Peter Pan though. 

Between the dark rides you will find the King Arthur Carousel. I actually had to check to see if I had ridden it before. We don't ride it every year, but it's a very nice carousel.

Behind the carousel is the Dumbo Ride. Now, I mentioned how Astro Orbiter is the same ride as Dumbo. I stand by that statement. Dumbo is way more fun, because seriously? Riding in Dumbo? Awesome!

Casey Jr. Train Ride is to the left of Dumbo. It's a fun little train ride, but really at this stage of the game, we may not ride it. We'll have to see how bad the lines are for everything else.

One of the coolest rides is to the right of Dumbo, and that is Storybook Land Canal Ride. You float around in a boat and listen to the stories of the Disney movies and look out over the scenery of those lands. The picture below doesn't do it justice. Plus, you have to see it at night to believe it!

It's really worth riding this.

Across from Storybook Land Canals, is Malia's least favorite ride. The Mad Tea Party. It's fun, even though it is a bit dizzying!

To the left of you will find the Matterhorn Bobsleds. I guess it's party of Fantasyland, but it's kind of in that gray area between Tomorrow and Fantasylands. It's not very Fantasy-like or Tomorrow-like, but it's the fastest ride in Fantasyland, so I'll take it!

The last ride is Small World. Sigh...Small World. Not a favorite, but it's one of those rides you have to do at least once, or you don't get the full Disneyland experience. The song will stay with you, so it's best to do it early so you can get other things in your head!

Outside of Fantasyland is Toontown. It's a pretty small area, with only 2 rides, but the other big attraction is this guy:

Mickey and most of the other Fab 5 (Goofy, Donald, Minnie, and Pluto) can be found hanging out here. So, head here if you are looking for autographs!

Honestly, I think the boys have outgrown this one now! It's a bit snug!

We will hit the rides in these two lands at least once. Maybe a couple of them twice, but most of these are not priorities anymore.

Tomorrow, I'll move to the other side of the park, to my most favorite parts!

The weight? Feh. 228.2 lbs. Seriously? Gotta keep things in perspective. I've gone down about 25 pounds in two months. That's still really good. Just got so happy with the rapid loss, that I am getting used to the change.

Meet me on Main Street!

"To all who come to this happy place; welcome!"

With those words, Walt Disney invited the world to come play in a land of make believe come to life. How cool was that? My first time at Disneyland was when I was 22 years old. I was an east coaster, so never went as a kid. I'm making up for it now! Since then, I have fallen in love with this place. From the first step in the gates, I feel like I am home. Disneyland is my place. When we go, I get to be the guide. I am the tour director. I love it!

Today, we are going to look at Main Street and Tomorrowland.

Main Street is the ideal of what small town America was like when Walt was growing up. There's the train station, the bank, city hall, a firestation, and shopping galore! Everything a kid could want could be found on Main Street.

Disney's Main Street is mostly about shopping these days, though there are some cool events and things to see on Main Street.

While on Main Street, you might see the Horse Drawn Carriage, the Omnibus, or one of the trains. A must do if you can is schedule a ride on the Lilly Belle.

This was the train car Walt would use to show guests around the park. It's named after his wife. Nowadays, it runs every once in a while, and you are able to ride it for free if you make reservations the day it's out. While on the ride around the park, you get to hear the history of the park and the car itself. It's a great story and one of the hidden gems of the park.

Also on Main Street you will find Great Moments in History starring Abraham Lincoln. This is a great Audioanimatronic presentation with a very lifelike Abe Lincoln talking about America. Very cool.

Main Street is a great place to watch the Fireworks at the end of a long day or catch a parade during the afternoon. During the Christmas season, you might even find snow drifting down on you! Pretty cool experience.

Shopping galore here as well. Sadly, most of the shops in Disneyland sell the exact same items, so if you don't want to go all over the park looking for something, you can usually find it on Main Street. A great service they offer to park guests is holding your shopping items for you until you are ready to pick them up. If you are a hotel guest, they will even deliver them to your hotel by the next morning. Pretty nice service. And it's free!

There are a few good places to eat along Main Street. Gibson Girl Ice Cream has some great ice cream! Refreshment Corner offers Coke and Fries, I believe. The big winner for me is the Corn Dog Cart! Love their hand dipped Corn Dogs! The Jolly Holiday Bakery opened last year and there you will find lots of yummy baked good! Their Matterhorn Macaroons are awesome!

The Hub has a really cool Walt and Mickey Statue that is worth stopping and getting a picture with.

Once you leave the Hub, a trip to the right side of the park takes you to Tomorrowland. I know that when Disneyland first opened Tomorrowland was really tomorrow land. Now? It's more Sci-Fi Land with a couple of other things thrown in.

The first ride you get to is the Astro Orbiter. It's a pretty straightforward ride. Hope aboard your rocket ship, and once the ride starts, you control how high off the ground your ship goes within a limited range. Fun for little ones I guess. Loses it's appeal after the first couple times. If you want one of these rides, wait to ride Dumbo. It's more iconic.

Next up is Star Tours, The Adventure Continues. Last year they did a major refurbishment on this ride and it now offers dozens of combinations of ride possibilities. You could go to Tattooine and Coruscant one time, and the next time go to Kashyyk and the Death Star. Not to mention the scenes in between! Worth a ride. Or two. Or three. It's a 3-D Motion ride, so keep that in mind!

Captain EO is around the corner. It's a bit dated and the 3D is a bit off. The last time I saw it, I had to take the glasses off and close my eyes. I guess if you really want to see it you can, but...eh.

Next up is the ride you must hit. We usually do this first thing in the morning. Space Mountain. It's probably the best ride in Disneyland. Not my favorite, but the best. I'll cover my favorite later in the week.

Fast, indoor, dark roller coaster. Very cool! Can't wait to ride this first thing Tuesday morning.

Innoventions is next. Skip it, unless there is a cool exhibit there. We will be there a few days before they unveil the Iron Man armor exhibit. Bummed about that!

The Autopia is great, if you don't drive normally. Otherwise, it's a bit boring. We usually do it once, so the kids can drive a car. 

Heading back to the front you pass the Monorail Station, which I'll talk about later and the Finding Nemo Subs. The subs are pretty cool. The Nemo ride is okay. Not a must do, but kind of fun, and a good way to get out of the heat and sun!

Past the Jedi Training Show and the Tomorrowland Terrace restaurant is the Buzz Lightyear ride. Another must in Tomorrowland. Fun, interactive dark ride. Worth the time in line!

Tomorrow we'll go deeper into the park!

Weight was up today to 227.6 lbs. I don't even know anymore. I'm tempted to stop weighing myself everyday. I think I'll skip that next week! Heh.

Today was a relatively good day, though stress levels increased after work. Crazy children at home! Counting the days until Disneyland!

           Big container of Romaine Lettuce with Balsamic and Olive Oil

PM Snack: 5 Macadamias
                  1 piece of Beef Bacon
                  4 oz of Lamb
                 1/2 a slice of Carrot Cake

Dinner:  Shrimp Taco Salad
             Big Ol' Salad
             2 pieces of Carrot Cake 

Water: About 70 oz

Sleep: about 8 hours of sleep
