Why?

Why did I leave Facebook? Well, the answer is simple, but with complications that made things too difficult to stay.

I had over 100 friends on FB and life was going swell. Then the political garbage started up. I don't mind other opinions, really, I don't. But when people start basing their opinions on lies and fears instead of truth and reality, it bugs me.

Then some friends joined a group that was basically wishing death on our President and that was the final straw for me. I couldn't just unfriend those people because I like them, but didn't need to see their crazy beliefs!

Then I read today of another crazy thing:

Basically you have no right to privacy on Facebook.

No thanks.

Pens vs Habs

Is it wrong to take joy in the Caps loss to the Habs? Probably. But with the owner of the Caps saying "We have finally arrived" as the premier team in the league, it is kind of funny to see them lose in the first round.

So, the Pens get to play the Habs. Should be an interesting series. I imagine the Pens win in 6 again, but it could be sooner if the Habs goalie starts playing like a normal human.

Pens in 6.

Birthday

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes.

Today was a pretty good day. Every class sang Happy Birthday to me. Malia brought her choir up to sing to me (by far the best version of the song I heard all day!). Even the 8th grade leadership students sang to me!

One student even baked me cupcakes! It was a very sweet thing to do. Especially since she is one of those kids you would trust enough to actually eat them!(Edit: The cupcakes, not the student!)

Going to have a quick bite to eat before heading off to the monthly Cub Scout meeting.

Who Needs Sleep?

Sleep is overrated anyway.

April 27th is a bittersweet day for me. It's the day before my birthday which is cool, but 3 years ago my dad passed away from smoking. It's been a tough thing to deal with ever since he left. I'm sad he is gone, angry that he couldn't stop smoking and left us, and happy that he is no longer in pain.

A day doesn't go by that I don't think of him. I hear him in my head or see someone who reminds me of him. I think about all the things he will miss. Me getting my Masters Degree. My boys growing up. Their graduations. Their weddings. And on and on.

Don't get me wrong, he was not a saint by any stretch of the imagination! He didn't always have a lot of patience with me, but hey, he's my dad and I loved him all the same.

Blech. It's a tough day to be sure.

As I finish this up, it is now April 28th. I am now 40 years old. I think about how much has changed in my life and wonder what it would be like to share those things with my dad.

I emailed mom earlier to let her know I was thinking about her. I don't see her or talk to her enough these days.

Sleep? Bah. The alarm goes off in 5 hours anyway. Maybe a few laughs with some MST3K will do the trick. Time to turn on the TV and turn off the computer for the night.

Good times

Quite the day. On the way to work we passed a truck that had its trailer flipped over. Very windy trip to Stead. Malia said it would be funny if the power was out and we were sent home.

We pull on to Stead Blvd and notice the traffic lights were all out. We get into school and all the lights are out except the emergency lights. Sweet! We get to go home.

Or not. According to district officials, we are staying and having a "normal" day.

Keep in mind, my room is on the side of the hall that has no windows. So it is pitch black in my room and you can't see your hand in front of your face.

Luckily, we have smart administrators who figured out all the problems, and I got to teach in Malia's choir room.

By the end of 2nd period, we had power back and had a "normal" day. Kids were hyped up like crazy, but it went as well as could be expected.

Hopefully tomorrow is a good day!

Disney Geek

I love Monday mornings! I know...Monday morning? Really?!?! Yep. Two of my favorite websites get their weekly update on all things Disneyland related, including pictures from around the park.

If you are a Disney Geek, or just want to see what's going on around the park, check out Mouseplanet and Micechat. You'll be glad you did!

Another great Disney website I check for contests and offers related to Disney is Mousesavers.

Have a great day!

Random Thoughts 2

1) Closet is as complete as it will be for now. Looks good, but going to have to get used to the new layout. And figure out how to get my tie racks to hang properly. Otherwise it should be good.

2) Volunteered at the Humane Society today. Played with the cats, pet a few dogs, looked at the small furry things. Malia brought home a kitten. Well, a kitten worth of fur anyway. She wanted to bring home a snake, but it was not available to be adopted. Darn. ;-)

3) Life on other planets? One of my favorite lines from the movie Contact goes: "But I guess I'd say if it is just us... seems like an awful waste of space." I think life exists out there, but it just too far away to really make a difference. We will probably never make contact in my lifetime.

Which may be a good thing. Stephen Hawking thinks we should avoid alien contact because they might want to take all of our stuff and leave us for dead. Maybe the makers of Independence Day had the right idea after all.

4) Smirnoff Ice may have overtaken Mike's Hard Lemonade as my new favorite beverage. Time will tell.

Movin' on!

Got this picture from the best blog about Penguins hockey, The Pensblog

Pens take it in overtime! Movin' on to the next round. Who do they get next? Depends upon what happens on Monday.

I think they can get any of teams left in the East with the exception of Washington. If the Caps win, then the Pens get either Boston at home or Buffalo on the road. If the Habs win, then the Pens could play any of the three, Philly, Buffalo, or Boston depending upon what happens in the Buffalo vs Boston series. Pulling for a Boston and Habs win, giving the Pens home ice advantage for the rest of the playoffs.

In other news, round one of the closet organizer is completed. Rounds two and three tomorrow.

Nerd Rock

Been listening to Kirby Krackle for a good part of the day. Some songs are kid friendly. Others? Not so much.

Check them out for some good nerd rock!

Another good nerd rocker is Jonathan Coulton.

Paint drying. Waiting to start putting up the shelves.

Game 6 starts in less than 20 minutes. Go Pens!

Out of the Closet...as it were...

The closet project started off so smoothly. Took all the clothes out and began demolition of the old shelves and bars. Once everything was out, we decided if we were going to put all the effort in to redoing the closet, it needed to be painted.

So, prep work for the paint is currently drying. Painting begins in just a little while.

Good times. Good times.

Guh

Alarm clocks should really know what day it is and not go off on the weekends. Just sayin'.

Busy day ahead. Tearing out the old closet and putting in a new closet organizer. Should be fun. Hopefully it will hold the weight of all the clothing Malia has! ;-)

Game 6 tonight. Pens looked good, but as a coworker said, losing in triple overtime could be a momentum shifter away from them. I hope not. Looking forward to another Cup.

Friday Morning Thoughts

1) Waking up in a fog. Literally. Can barely see across the street.

2) Interesting email from Brother Jeff. Let's see how things play out old friend!

3) Skype is a powerful tool, but it sucks when it doesn't work right!

4) Triple overtime=excitement. Losing in triple overtime? Not so much fun. The Pens put on a good show, but the Senators were fighting for their lives. Pens can close out the series in Ottawa on Saturday night. Go Pens!

5) Work today. Let's see how the little darlings do today.

See ya!

Random Thoughts 1

1) Playoff hockey is much better than any other sport. Overtime playoff hockey? Even more so!

2) The whole Punchdub thing Volkswagen is doing is lame, but the commercial with the parking lot security guards has a nice little surprise in it. The music sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it. Then it hit me. It's from my favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie, The Trouble with Harry.

3) KFC Double Down? I kept it down, but won't get another.

What's up with the title of this blog?

Since I am no longer using Facebook, I decided I need a place to talk to people, or at least spout off on the Internets about whatever I want, so here is my first blog entry.

The title of this blog comes from one the best episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Prince of Space. Look it up or get it on DVD! Well worth the viewing.

Ok, enough for one post. Next post will probably be about Pittsburgh Penguin playoff hockey! Go Pens!
